Mormons have a Higher Rate of Divorce Than Other Popular Religious Groups: Experts agree that the national divorce rate is difficult to calculate. The church often touts a low temple marriage divorce rate because they are reluctant to process temple divorces until both ex-spouses are ready to get temple-remarried. This gives them the ability to publish a skewed temple marriage divorce rate which sounds much lower than it really is. Real studies are expensive and not performed very often. One study by Barna in 1999 showed the Mormon divorce rate at 24%, which was just higher than Catholics and Lutherans who were at 21%.
